SNF Badger Accounts

What is Badger?

Badger LMS is the commercial version of Coral, a software suite developed for managing shared labs by engineers at SNF and MIT's Microsystems Technology Labs. Coral or Badger are now deployed in over two dozen university labs across the nation; MIT's MTL continues to host the Open Coral platform. SNF converted from Coral to Badger in January 2013.

Mobile/Web Badger

With the move of Badger to cloud services, we have a version of Badger that will work on any web browser, including on your phone. The web version has reduced functionality, but allows enable/disable and reservations from any web browser:

In the Lab: Badger on Clients

While you can access Badger from your own Java-enabled device, Chromeboxes are located throughout the lab for your convenience.  Instructions on how to access Badger are available at each Chromebox station and in more detail here.

Badger on Local Systems

On- or off-campus: You can run Badger from your Java-enabled system. First, you will need to install the Java Runtime Environment (instructions below). If you are on-campus (connected to the Stanford network), you can go directly to the Badger download. If your login is a Stanford email, you don't need to use "@stanford.edu" on your login.

Off-campus: Some people find that they can successfully run Badger on-campus but encounter difficulties off-campus. This is generally due to firewall policies on non-Stanford systems. You may need to ask your network admin to allow your computer access to port range of 50000:50014 on the SNF Badger host (badger2-snf.stanford.edu).

When you start up Badger, security warning panels may appear. Just click on the box for "I accept the risk..." and click "Run" each time to reach the login screen. Enter your Badger login and the lab panels will then appear. (To avoid the security warnings in the future, click on "I accept the risk..." and then click on "Show Options" just below. Then select "Do not show this again..." The security warning panels will not appear again, at least until the next software update.)

Another problem with accessing Badger can occur with security updates. If you have Java installed on your device, but observe a security error message in accessing the Badger site, please follow these instructions for adding the SNF Badger site to your Java exception list.

Install Java Runtime Environment

  • Windows Installation
    • Download Java Runtime Environment
    • Make sure you have "Java Runtime Environment or JRE" (not the Server or Developer versions)
  • MAC Installation
    • Use Software Update to ensure you have the latest version of Java for your MacOS.
    • Note, this requires Java for MacOS 10.6 and higher.

Download Badger. This is Badger lab management program for SNF; note this is not the same instance as for SNSF. The difference can be seen in the Lab Tabs on the upper left: you should see "SNF", "MOCVD" and "nSiL" for the SNF instance.

Badger Reports: You can see your Badger charges up to the previous day, using reports.  (Please note that the charges reported do not include Stanford's Facilities & Administrative overhead.)
